The Americans finished the project of unusual Mazda

Mazda Company does not consider the project being their own, that’s why the future of this car is a bit foggy.

Mazda Deep Orange concept is designed, built and painted by the students of the Center for Automotive Research of Clemson University and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena with the participation of several third party partners. This is a completely independent project of Americans, although it was still held under the supervision of Mazda and, by the way, its agents. This hatchback is equipped with a combustion engine and electric drive, with automatic modes providing their collaborative or separate operation. Mazda\'s current style is read in the form of the grille and the faces of the sidewalls.

This exotic five-door vehicle has six folding chairs installed in two rows. Gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine is mounted in the front and moves only the front axle, an electric motor hidden under the boot floor is responsible for the rear axle’s movement. One of the most intriguing features of the concept is that the majority of the load-bearing elements of its body are made of aluminum sheets stacked on patented technology from the U.S. company Industrial Origami. It is really simple from the first glance.

Firstly, from the metal sheet some patterns with accurately calculated holes, projections and regularly spaced notches are made. Then the assembly line worker simply attaches such details with each other with his bare hands. Such assembly process resembles the one that takes places when making a strong box from a flat sheet of cardboard. This way there’s no need for costly dies and powerful presses, which helps save significant amount of money. According to engineers, such technology proves to be useful when producing small series of vehicles.

The chassis of this concept was built and shown at the SEMA show last year buy only now it its potential was used to the fullest. Derek Jenkins, the representative of North American wing of Mazda said that students have shown really interesting technologies that have bright future.
