Saturn Ion is a series of compact cars based on the GM Delta platform and sold by GM’s subdivision during 2003-2007 years. In 2006 this was the most sold vehicle in North America’s compact car segment.
The first production period started in 2003 and lasted for one year. The first ever version of Saturn Ion was presented at the New York International Auto Show in 2002. The standard engine option of this car included the 2.2 liter Ecotec DOHC I4 engine with 140 hp of power and five-speed automatic transmission. The available body styles were the four-door sedan and coupe.
In 2005 new series of Saturn Ions appeared. The old five-speed transmission was replaced due to its problematic shift-flare. The GM's four-speed 4T45-E was installed instead. Interior design resulted in new steering wheel, upgraded seats and sound-reduction technology that made the engine’s operation more silent and less disturbing. Exterior changes appeared in upgraded fascia that received a larger front grille and redesigned wheel covers.
The following year’s Saturn Ion model had really insignificant changes. The only noticeable update was presented by the new audio system with MP3 playback feature. The engine option was completed with upgraded 2.4 liter I4 engine that gave 170 hp (127 kW) of power.
In 2007 new engine option became available, the 2.4 liter Ecotec engine was improved and the power output became 175 hp (130 kW). Additional feature package appeared along with the upgraded engine. This package was called "Appearance Package" and offered redesigned rear and front bumpers, chrome exhaust tip and side moldings.
During the entire time of Saturn Ion production GM offered special sport edition called Saturn Ion Red Line. This vehicle featured a 2.0 liter Ecotec LSJ engine with 205 hp (153 kW) of power supplemented with air-to-liquid intercoolers and Eaton M62 Roots superchargers. The Red Line was able to accelerate to 100 km/hour in 6.0 seconds, a really amazing result for a car this size and type.
